A letter to you…

FROM GOLDA

Dear Reader,

When I started writing Born on an Island, I felt like a weight was being lifted off my shoulders. The stories I share in the book were turning like a whirlwind in my head for decades. The memories were vivid, but there was no order. Finally, taking the time to think about my life experiences has helped restore order and remind me of the grace that is always with me. I would encourage anyone to explore writing about your life as a pathway to peace.

This book contains stories from the first quarter-century of my life. I have seen, through social media, that there’s great power in sharing one’s stories. Not all our stories have mass appeal, but there’s always someone, somewhere, whose life is changed by the simple things we are brave enough to share.

This book is a demonstration of my strong belief that stories have the power to transform lives.

Finally, I must share the most important part of this journey. The process of publishing this book has taken longer than expected. Much longer. When I started, I thought writing would be the hard part. I was wrong. The hard part has been enduring the many obstacles and years it took to get this volume into your hands. And so, what began as a lesson in faith has become a masterclass in endurance, taught by the greatest teacher. I have learnt that love endures all things.

Happy Reading!

BORN ON AN ISLAND

About this book

As a young girl growing up in the Caribbean, Golda Lee Bruce believed that her place was small because of the size of her island. As a child she questioned why no one on Sesame Street looked or sounded like her. It was the first sign that her life was different from what she saw in mainstream media. Born on an Island is a series of stories that highlight the richness and uniqueness of life in the Caribbean while following the journey of a young girl to find her faith and her place in the world.

About the author

Golda Lee Bruce is a Caribbean storyteller. She was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago where she worked for many years as a journalist and news anchor. She is now a Communications Specialist working in Washington D.C. Golda is married to Micheal; they have a son and a daughter.
